The facts

  • According to The Verge, Reddit announced a new feed experience with two homepage tabs: Following, for posts from subreddits you follow, and For You, which adds recommendations tied to your interests.
  • The Verge reporter Jay Peters says he already had the feeds on his account the day before the announcement.
  • Earlier this year Reddit said it would deprecate r/all, the page showing posts popular across the platform, as part of efforts to simplify Reddit and improve Home feed personalisation.
  • Old Reddit, which lets you sort by best, hot, new, rising and controversial, remains available for now, but The Verge says Reddit plans to cut access for people who haven't used it recently.

Case notes · Danny's take

Why it matters

Reddit is moving from a page everyone could see to a feed built around you. r/all was a shared public square. A For You feed is a private one. That suits discovery, but it also means two people no longer see the same internet. If a platform decides what you see, ask what it is optimising for.

For builders

If you run a community or promote a project on Reddit, the shared popularity page is gone, so reach now depends on whether the recommendation system picks you up. Watch how your posts perform in For You against Following before you change how you post.
