South Korea's ruling party wants to delay its crypto tax

The Democratic Party has formally asked the government to postpone the crypto income tax due on 1 January 2027, but has not said for how long, according to Unchained.

The facts

  • According to Unchained, party chief Kim Min-seok told the Supreme Council on 4 November that the party formally proposes deferring tax on virtual asset income, which is due to start on 1 January 2027.
  • The tax is a 22% rate, including local tax, on crypto income above 2.5 million won. It was written into law in 2020 and has been delayed three times, so this would be the fourth.
  • No delay period has been named. Electronic Times reported that two years has mainly been discussed, and Unchained reported on 26 October that officials were reportedly leaning towards a January 2029 start.
  • The delay is not law yet. The National Assembly still has to amend the Income Tax Act before 1 January 2027, and the Digital Asset Basic Act has not been enacted.

Case notes · Danny's take

Why it matters

A tax that keeps getting pushed back is a tax the market learns to ignore. Three delays already, and a fourth now looks likely. The party says this time it will set a clear deferral period and finish the groundwork first, including use of overseas transaction information and computer verification. That's the real test. Until the length is in writing, it's a promise, not a rule.

For traders

Don't trade the headline. Watch whether the Assembly actually amends the Income Tax Act, and what end date goes into the text. Until then, treat any talk of a two-year or January 2029 date as unconfirmed.

For builders

The party says it wants to pass the Digital Asset Basic Act first, to set the framework and give companies an adaptation period. If you build tax, reporting or compliance tools for Korea, the groundwork items named (overseas transaction data, verification, tax guidance) show where the demand is likely to be.
